The pudendal nerve is responsible for providing sensation to the perineal region, which is situated between the anus and testicles in men and between the anus and vagina in women. Pudendal neuralgia, which is the most severe and persistent type of pelvic pain, is caused by damage to this nerve and can cause excruciating pain that makes it difficult for individuals to urinate, have sex, or even sit down. The causes of pudendal neuralgia vary and can range from trauma to childbirth, while some cases are unexplained. However, Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) has been shown to be an effective means of reducing pain, and pudendal nerve blocks are among the other treatments available for this condition.
